Last year  during lunch in school, I  was sketching  after I  saw `Return to Oz,' on DVD (a wonderful film which is the unofficial sequel to  `The Wizard of Oz,') the prior night.  I  started to think  of a different approach, a  darker (but hopefully not too  nasty),  version of the beloved characters.
In the back of my mind, I was designing it as  a fictional comic book cover, but I didn't real adhere to that  premise during its entire fabrication.
I  tried to  make Dorothy's companion  fairly dangerous. The  scarecrow  looks like he could kill you  with a swoosh of his pick-axe. The tin woodsman could definitely do a lot of damage with his cannon and belching pollution.  The cowardly lion is the most unchanged but looks like to has killed something (perhaps Toto?). Dorothy was intentionally drawn as a slutty tramp, she is dragging a bloody Toto and she has  bunch of dynamite in her basket.
I was going to add some of the flying monkeys, but just  added some eerie-looking Ozian woods. Hidden in the backdrop are two figures hung from the  tree.
This image was  finished digitally  after the detailed pencil  sketch.  It's 15% of the size of the original. So you can't really  see the scarecrow's gator skin-like texture on his  shirt.
It  was fun to do...  the Oz stories are some of my favorites so this `parody'  hopefully shows a smidgeon of respect and not an ounce of ridicule.
