Between working on Pilgrym albums (after `Pilgramage' and before T`he Great Divide' ), musician Andy Wells wanted to re-release his `Lost Toys' album. I suggested something like the image, doing a rough skecth in my book, and at the sam time as sending my idea to Andy, he sent me almost an exactly similar idea in text- so we were definitely on the same page.
Instead of doing epic/large scale fantasy pieces, I suggested something more moody, intimate, a piece that would work with the classical themes of the album. The CD is roughly based on an Edwardian children's book; so I went with a timeless sort of mood. The image was done a tad smaller than I usually do, but will hold up quite well even on LP size. I stayed with a palette of earth-tones with the exception of the doll/marionette.. which is a tad more colorful. A strong light beam directs the eye to the toy- a simple but effective composition. Titles were put in the obvious dark negative space. Everything was enjoyable to render but the wood grain... that was not fun!
